Bishnupur district has its headquarters at Bishnupur, 27km from the state capital, Imphal. Bishnupur was named after the “Bishnu Mandir” located at this palce. It was opened on the 25th May, 1983. It is bounded on the North by Imphal West District, Churchanpur on the South, Imphal West & Thoubal districts on the East.

IMPORTANT RIVERS: The Nambol (Yangoi), the Thongjaorok and the Khuga are important rivers of the district.

NATIONAL PARK: Keibul Lamjao is a floating National Park in the southern part of the lake, where the brow-antlered deer (Cervus eldi eldi), an endangered species, is found. This particular species of deer is not found anywhere in the world except at Keibul Lamjao with its floating mass (Phumdis) making a natural habitat of the animal. This is the only floating park in the world.

MAJOR FARMING SYSTEMS/ENTERPRISES
(BASE ON THE ANALYSIS MADE BY THE KVK):
1.  Rice cultivation followed by fallow in 90% of cultivated area where irrigation facilities are not available.
2.  Rice followed by mustard/peas/potatoes/rabi vegetables in 10% of cultivated areas where irrigation facilities are there.
3.  Rice cultivation supplemented by dairying/poultry/piggery/fishing.
4.  Fishing in and around Loktak and other smaller lakes in the district.
